STDPreventionOnline:
Now Offering Free Access to STD/AIDS Journals
Last
fall the Internet and STD Center of Excellence launched a website for the
specific purpose of enhancing communications between people who work in STD/HIV
prevention program, research, policy, and advocacy. STDPreventionOnline
provides an interactive, virtual workspace that allows users to upload and
download information relevant to their work. These resources can be shared with
the public or within restricted groups. Groups can be initiated by any user and
allow for the exchange of information between group members through text-,
audio-, and video-based materials, news-feeds, blogs, podcasts, and more. The
site also features news sections and announcements of conferences, meetings,
and other events. As an added benefit, the site recently added free
subscriptions to the journals Sexually Transmitted Diseases and AIDS. More journals will be added to STDPO's
library in the near future. Subscription to the
site is free. STDPreventionOnline is a collaboration between the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention and the Denver Public Health Department. For

CDC Study Finds One in Four Teen Girls Has STD
A
CDC study released earlier this month estimates that one in four (26 percent)
young women between the ages of 14-19 in the US is infected with at least one
of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (human papillomavirus (HPV),
chlamydia, herpes simplex virus, and trichomoniasis). The study is the first to
examine the combined national prevalence of common STDs among adolescent women
in the United States, and provides the clearest picture to date of the overall
STD burden in adolescent women. To read the press release, please visit

CDC Underscores Current Recommendation for Preventing HIV
Transmission
An article recently published by Switzerland’s Federal
Commission for HIV/AIDS states that HIV-positive individuals on effective
antiretroviral therapy are not at risk for transmitting HIV to their sexual
partners under certain circumstances. The Commission acknowledges that
there are no scientific data that the risk of transmission in these
circumstances is zero. The Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) underscores its recommendation that people living with HIV who
are sexually active use condoms consistently and correctly with all sex
partners. View the statement at: http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/resources/press/020108.htm
